Trade and the Americas:
WTO, NAFTA, CAFTA and more
for 2009 and Beyond
November 12, 2008
The Nikko Hotel, Mexico City
Overview
This conference will address the international trade issues faced by the Latin American region with particular emphasis on Mexico.
Our international experts will review the US external trade policy, present an analysis of Bush’s legacy and suggest what can be expected on these issues from the new administration. NAFTA, a treaty under severe criticism, will be discussed. In particular, the debate will be focused on whether the treaty has achieved its original objectives on free trade, fair competition, creation of investment opportunity, protection of IP and the implementation of dispute resolution procedures. Our panelists will also discuss whether a new treaty would be more effective.
Challenges faced by Mexico within NAFTA will be at the core of the discussions along with the country’s evolving relationship with other Latin American countries and the rest of the world, particularly China. Further, how is Mexico responding to these new trade challenges?
Lastly, the panelists will address the issues relating to the WTO; in particular the state of the Doha Round. Evaluation of the Dispute Settlement System will be made.
Julio Lacarte, who has been involved with the GATT/WTO trading system since its creation sixty years ago, will make the keynote address on the Global Trade Rules.
